Congratulations on your new rental! It’s almost perfect, but you think the bathroom and kitchen could use little work. Are they not exactly matching the aesthetic you had in mind? No problem, let’s get to work!
A neutral palette and colors toward the back of the room will work wonders. Your gaze will automatically be drawn outwards by introducing colors slowly, and the room will appear larger. If you’re experiencing the bathroom blues, try adding some textiles to make the room’s design more cohesive.
Do not be afraid to go all out and make a statement. Try a big, patterned shower curtain as the center of your bathroom design. It will instantly take that boring white wall up a notch.
Pro Tip: Move your curtain rod closer to the ceiling to create the illusion of a “longer” look or higher ceilings.
Consider a wall of mirrors. Not only will you be able to see a 360 view of yourself, but the room will appear more prominent, and the space will appear more extensive due to the reflection of light or pattern. If a whole wall of mirrors sounds intimidating or simply costs too much, try adding a few mirrors on one particular wall.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget spackle! Be sure to repair any damages when you remove the mirror and restore your wall to make it look as it did when you first moved in.
Installing a curved shower rod will make your shower feel much more spacious. If you removed a straight shower rod original to your home, remember to keep it. When you’ve outgrown your rental, you’ll have to return the property to its original condition.
Are you Running out of space for shampoo and soap? Installing a ledge is a great place to start. Try making one yourself or purchase one from a store near you. Maybe you have a bath. A portable shelf can also lay across from one side of the tub to the other. Ledges can also be installed along the wall of your bathroom, so all of your bathroom necessities are within reach.
Don’t be afraid to tackle that DIY project or even source from small businesses featured on sites like Etsy! It’s time to get crafty with any space you have left.
Low ceiling? Try longer shades for the appearance of added height; neutral colors are best for a tall look.
Pro Tip: Raise your curtain rod to a foot above your window to make windows seem much taller!
Shy away from pieces that distract from the room’s elements. Be mindful that if you insist on squeezing in a larger table than your space allows, the bulky item will detract from your carefully chosen decor.
Pro Tip: If you have a kitchen island, make the most of it! Kitchen islands not only provide extra space for cooking and serving but adding bar stools (perhaps with a pop of color) can also provide more seating for family and houseguests.
Choose furniture pieces with long chair legs to show off floor space and make areas seem less cramped, especially in small kitchens. Also, think lightweight when purchasing kitchen furniture like kitchen stools or slim tables for an airy and more spacious feeling.
Kitchen drawer organizers are great for keeping the silverware and utensils in order and limiting clutter. Magnetic holders for knives or kitchen gadgets can create more drawer space by moving items to walls or countertop corners. Command strips are also great to help hang kitchen towels, stove gloves, or pot holders with a loop on them. If you’re running out of storage for pots and pans, consider buying a relatively inexpensive pegboard or installing a pot rack.
Absolutely! Add a bold color or a pattern to light up your rental kitchen. Home improvement stores and websites offer a large variety of washable patterns and colors and won’t show spills. You can also buy or make a fun vinyl floor mat. Rugs and mats can go almost anywhere in your kitchen.
