A Guide to Keeping Your Pets Safe During Summer

Summer is filled with fun adventures, but it also presents new dangers for your pets. Here’s how to keep your furry family members safe during the summer heat!

  1. Keep the AC on When Leaving the House

While it might be more economical and eco-friendly to turn your air conditioning down or off when leaving the house, this practice isn’t the safest for your pets. On hot days, the best temperature to keep your home at is between 75 and 78 degrees for dogs and no higher than 86 degrees for cats.

  1. Limit Outdoor Time on Hot Days

Many dogs love going for long walks and running around the backyard, but it’s best to limit your pets’ outdoor activities and exercise on hot days. Substitute indoor play instead to keep your pets entertained while avoiding the risk of heat exhaustion!

  1. Ensure Constant Access to Fresh Water

During the summer months, your pets can easily become dehydrated. To prevent this, they should always have access to fresh, cold water, especially outdoors. Add ice cubes to their water bowls on particularly hot days to keep them cool all day.

  1. Don’t Let Them Walk on Hot Asphalt

When the heat soars, surfaces like asphalt can quickly reach scalding temperatures. While we can wear shoes to protect our feet, our canine companions don’t have the same luxury. Thus, their sensitive paws can get burned if they stand on hot asphalt for too long. Keep your pets away from these surfaces on hot days, or invest in some dog booties to give their precious paws extra protection!

  1. Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Just like you should never leave kids unattended in a parked car, the same applies to your pets. Doing so can lead to heatstroke or death, even if you leave the air conditioning on while you’re gone—not to mention it’s illegal in several states!

  1. Keep Unscreened Doors and Windows Closed

Letting fresh air into the house is one of the best parts of the summer season, and pets love soaking in the sun as much as we do! However, if you’re choosing to leave doors and windows open in your home, you should always ensure protective screens are properly screwed in and keep an eye on your pets. Loose or missing screens can be a fall risk, especially for second-floor windows and doors, and you don’t want anyone sneaking out and getting lost.

  1. Be Aware of the Signs of Overheating

Preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke is certainly preferable to treating them, but if your pet does get overheated, you want to be prepared by knowing the signs. Some key symptoms include difficulty breathing, excessive panting, drooling, weakness, elevated heart rate, vomiting, increased body temperature, and even collapse or seizures. If you suspect your pet has heat exhaustion or heatstroke, contact your vet right away.

  1. Never Leave a Pet Unattended by the Pool

You should never leave a pet alone around the pool, ocean, lake, or any body of water, even if they’re a proficient swimmer. If they fall in, they may panic and be unable to get back out on their own. Additionally, don’t let your pet drink pool or ocean water, as the chemicals and salt can be harmful to them.

  1. Stay Away From Hazardous Lawn and Garden Products

We all want our landscaping to look amazing for summer, but pet owners should be extra mindful of the kinds of products and practices they’re using. Insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers can all be toxic to pets, so keep your furry friend away from areas where these products have been applied. Many lawn and garden products include specific instructions for use around animals, so make sure to follow those recommendations to keep your pets safe.

  1. Get Some Flea and Tick Medication

In the summertime, fleas, ticks, and other insects come out to play. If you have dogs or outdoor cats, be sure to keep up with their flea and tick prevention medications. Or, if your pet isn’t currently on medication, schedule an appointment with your vet for recommendations.

  1. Ensure Your Plants Are Pet-Safe

When choosing plants for your landscaping, aesthetics are often the top consideration, but safety should also be a concern if you’re a pet owner. Exposure to or ingesting some ornamental and garden plants can harm animals. So, before setting your pets free in your yard, make sure you know what kind of plants they can get into.

  1. Never Shave Long Hair

Some pets, especially dogs, have long, luscious coats that help keep them warm in the winter. During the sweltering summer, however, all that fur can make your pets prone to overheating. Hence, many people choose to cut their pets’ hair to help them cope with the heat. If you’re considering cutting your pet's fur, remember that those fur layers also help prevent sunburn. Giving your pet a trim won’t hurt, but shaving them can do more harm than good!

Your pets are beloved family members, so prioritize their health this summer by following these 12 tips to keep your furry friends safe from heat, insects, and other summertime dangers.
