Moving can trigger a variety of emotions. The excitement of starting somewhere new mixed with the stress of packing is certainly something that everyone will go through at least once in their life. Don’t fret! Here’s a guide to make that move just a little easier for you.
Before You Move
Everything needs to start somewhere, and once you get down to the basics, the rest will come easy! Organize your belongings to start. Week by week, decide what you would like to pack, donate, or buy upon your move. Create a list or spreadsheet of how you want to organize your items. This is commonly done by room but can also be by importance or by item. Organizing in this way will save you loads of time once you’ve completed your move and begun to unpack since you’ll already know, more or less, where to find each item. Don’t forget to pre-measure your bigger items of furniture to avoid any potential mishaps come moving day. Lastly, make sure you plan accordingly with any previous responsibilities to give yourself enough time to pack and move in without any added stress!
Packing
One of the biggest pains is, without a doubt, packing boxes. One of the best ways to ease into packing is to start with things that you use infrequently as these will be the things you worry the least about and also allow you to continue to use the “popular” objects in your home. Your next step should be to label your boxes so you know exactly where everything is. Pro Tip: Pack and label "essentials" as boxes of items you'll need right away for quick and easy access on your moving day. Another tip for an effortless packing experience is to divide up the items you deem most valuable. This could range anywhere from sentimental value or expense. Don’t forget a moving truck or U-Haul!
Documents
One of the forgotten items of moving is to make sure that all of your legal documents are updated and have your correct, new address. You can always go to the post office and fill out a change-of-address form, or do it online at usps.gov. Be sure to keep track of forms you have and have not (yet) updated so that nothing gets left behind.
