It’s beginning to look a lot like summer! Say goodbye to that winter chill and hello to the sun as you turn in your snow boots for sandals! While you update your wardrobe, don’t forget to make your home look cool while you’re staying warm. Here are some ideas on how to prepare your home for summer:

Give coat a new meaning

Trade in your winter coat for a fresh “coat” of paint for your house! New seasons are great for change, so pick a new color for a wall in your home. Incorporate color theory with peel-and-stick wallpaper in shades of white, cream, pink, or cool blues and greens. These colors, compared to brighter ones, help bring the visual temperature down while the physical temperatures rise (How to Transition Into Summer Decor, 2021)! An alternative is to incorporate a few pops of summer colors in your home decor. These can range from the colors above to bright yellow or orange, fuchsia, electric blue, or lime green to amplify a vibrant summer.

Let the light in

Since your windows stay shut during the cold weather, spring and summer may call for a tune-up. Be sure to check for gaps in your window frames and ensure that their mechanics are still working properly by opening and closing your windows a few times each.

Soak up that summer sun with freshly washed windows. A recommended way to get squeaky-clean windows is to fill up two buckets: the first with a cup of vinegar, a cup of ammonia, and a gallon of hot water, and the other simply with warm water. Wash your windows with the vinegar-ammonia solution, followed by warm water, and squeegee them dry. Maintaining your windows will ensure that you can feel the summer sun sneaking throughout your home, whether they are open or not!

TLC for your terrain

The best part of warmer weather is enjoying the outdoors, even if that just means your backyard. Make sure your yard is ready for the task! Depending on where you live, you likely paused your sprinkler usage in the winter. This is a great time to re-assess areas of need and start a new watering and care schedule! Be sure to check your sprinklers for any winter damage that may have occurred from extreme weather conditions, including broken heads or cracked pipes.

AC-ential: Check your air conditioning

Turn off those fireplaces and fire up the AC! One easy way to prepare for summer is by turning your air conditioning back on and confirming all is working correctly. Though it may not be dire until the warmer summer months, checking the AC now can help to avoid getting trapped in the heat. Get outside and clear away any leaves, branches, or other debris that may have settled on top of your AC unit. Inside the home, replace your furnace air filter to make sure it’s breathing in clean air, and continue to do so if allergens are prevalent in your area!

We know you and your loved ones are itching for summer, and cannot wait for the memories to come. In the meantime, make sure your house is prepped for the warm days and nights that come with the season! For more seasonal tips and tricks, visit our blog!
